Let's talk Tools and substitutes.

I began my sculpting career over 30 years ago as a young married army wife.  We lived on a soldiers income and there was not any funds left after necessities were taken care of.  So, I had to be creative and find ways to still create, as it was a must for me to create. It's  just something that lives deep in my soul to be creative.  I bought my first pack of sculpey clay, as back then it was only $1 and I only had a dollar literally.  I remember feeling bad spending that dollar.  Well now that I had the pack of clay, I had no tools to create with.  I used a pencil for a pointy tool, knitting needles, sewing needles, and a small paring knife.  I am writing this blog to maybe reach those who do not have lots of funds for creating and to show there are many ways to still achieve being creative with little or no means.  I am also a big recycler and I will share a few of those ideas in future post.  Did you know you can take a needle and make a clay handle on it and presto you now have a pointy clay tool.  I also like to hot glue buttons onto ends of pieces of wood to make my own impression tools.
I made two bunnies out of that little pack of clay and thus this is where it all  began.

Below is a picture of a basic set of sculpting tools for any beginner.  I do sell these in my etsy shop.  I find alot of people go out and buy fancy tools and then end up never really using most of them so I have put together a basic set.  All my patterns to date can be sculpted with just this set.  Also, remember if you can't afford tools make them with things laying around the house.  Just don't re-use any kitchen utensils  after using in sculpting compounds.
Picture

The one tool I most recommend is the "Steel Blade"
This tool is great to pick up and remove something from your work surface without mis-shaping the piece you are working on.  It is also  a good slicer to slice of your sculpting material.  My #1 one tool!!!!! It never leaves my side.
Picture
Example:A wooden tool versus a pencil, same thing.
Picture
Example: Round wooden tool versus a piece of quikwood sculpted and cured.  I bet you never thought to use sculpting compound to shape your tools.
Picture
Large needle inserted into quikwood to make a handle and cured, Instant point tool.
Picture
Good Old Fashioned knitting needle makes a great tool for smaller mouth openings.
Picture
Picture

Buttons, Buttons, break out those old buttons!  If you don't have wood handles to glue them to make quikwood handles and now you have instant impression tools.  These are some of mine I made over 25 plus years ago.

I 'll sign out with this one last quote to help inspire someone maybe with little to no means that has a passion to want to create with the photo below, and just like this little mouse, if you have the will there is a way!!!
Be creative!

I feel so blessed to have met so many people thru art.  It is a blessing to share the same passion with those who love to create as much as you do.  I think FB has its bad and good points.  There are days where I disappear from it all, as I don't like the negative side it has at times.  I have to tell you though without it, I would never be walking the journey I am now at this point in my life.  I can gett lost looking and scrolling at all my very talented art friends pics of things they are creating.  My FB feed is full of so many creative artist.

Along the way, I have become friends with 3 very talented ladies and I have to share my new Halloween Tree. The mail came on Monday during the Gourdeous Santa class and I literally stopped class to open a package that came from my friend Charlotte.  I knew what was inside .  Ohh the excitement!!
Picture
My friend Amy Mogish designed this piece and started a monthly ornament club where you would each month be mailed a set of the ornaments and patterns to work on.  I  would have loved to have made this tree for myself, but I knew, I would never have time to paint for myself lol.  So, many artist know this feeling. I have projects now on my table waiting for me to complete for me.  My good friend Charlotte Fletcher , sent me some of the ornaments in July for my birthday how lucky am I.  I then ask her if she would do the entire tree for me. We made a bargain deal, which I think I got the better end of the stick.  Sheila Landry in Canada is a very talented wood cutter and she cuts all the surfaces and the trees.  I feel blessed to have this tree designed by Amy, cut by Shelia and Painted by Charlotte lovingly for me.  It was touched by 3 of my very creative friends and I will treasure it.  I am usually a fall decor kinda girl but this tree just jumped out at me.

This past year I have had many who travel out of state for classes and a few have ask to stay another day to do another project so I have tried to accommodate as I am very grateful for those willing to travel so far to spend the day with me.  I added this class for travelers, and I had 3 ladies who joined me for a "Gourdeous" Santa day.  I have taught this class so many times I have lost count.
Next year you will see 2 classes in a weekend Saturday/Sunday to better accommodate those wanting to travel for classes as I appreciate you immensely!

Meet "Charlie"!  Charlie is a puppet that I have been doing puppet shows with on face time since my grandchildren were born.  They think I have magical powers and can make Charlie talk.  Those on my personal FB actually got to see Charlie in the hot tub over the weekend.  I do this all in fun for my grandchildren as they really do think he is real. (I'm not crazy or am I??)  I was getting ready for class yesterday and Charlie kept peeking out the curtain wanting to know if they are here yet!! (The students).  I said no Charlie and your not to be pestering the students when they get here.
I told my grandson Charlie was helping in the classroom/studio today and he wanted to know who was boss Charlie or I LOL!  I said "Me of course!"
Charlie decided to go out and wait with Howard out on the porch in front of the studio for the students to arrive but later gave that up as it was 90 in PA and he said "It's toooo HOT!"
Picture
Next I turned around and I found him digging in the candy bowl for the students,  Helping himself to a cup of coffee and then he was admiring the flowers a student from yesterday class brought me.  No wonder he is all hyper Chocolate and candy!!!!  I told him he needed to be constructive if he was going to help.
Picture

Picture
So, I found him on top of my gourd sitting!  Then he was sitting in Marcia's chair and I told him he would have to move when she arrived.  I hear all this chattering and I turn around and he is in the Christmas tree with guess who???  Naughty Ralphie!  As class was about to begin I hear snoring and Charlie fell asleep in the Christmas tree.  Poor thing slept thru the entire class and never met any of the students.

I have said this a million times that some of my best days are spent with those who love to share in the passion of being creative with me!  It is always a joy and a pleasure.  What better way to spend the day than making people smile.  I'm blessed!
Blessings!

Even Santa Loves Pumpkin Spice!

9/25/2017

I had originally designed this piece for a potential book project for the Fall book that was released.  This project was just simply to large to fit within the page limits so I had decided to make it into a pattern packet and a class project.  The surface you can find on the Viking Woodcraft site as they supplied me with the surface to create on.  I was originally going to do 3 pieces in this set , a matching ornament, and a standing one as well, but there are just not enough hours in the day to do all the sketches I have laying around. Someday I may share a pic of the hundreds of sketches in piles.  I had fun designing this piece and it would look lovely hanging in a kitchen for the Fall holidays.   I'm thinking Santa loves his Pumpkin Spice cookies!!!!  If you missed my recipe for the Pumpkin Chocolate chip cookies be sure and scroll down the blog as they are my favorite!
Picture
This would look lovely hanging in a  kitchen fall-thru the end of the year.  His little tea light is battery operated.  I'm thinking I may have to make some actual pumpkin spice cookies now.

Skinning The Pumpkin! and secret shower curtain tip!

I was going to wait to post this blog as I will be teaching all day today and tomorrow but I couldn't wait to share the newest concrete pumpkin?? or not!
I believe a few had ask the question, do you dip the pumpkin?  The answer would be no. You pour the concrete into the pumpkin bucket, insert the can (If you wish).  I then cover it with plastic to hold the can inside or balance something on top to insure the can stays submerged.  It can be tricky and on the last batch, because I wanted the can sticking out for about an inch, I used 2 bungee straps.  I did let them cure for a few days till they were good and cured. You wouldn't want to paint on moist concrete.  I promise all my post won't be about concrete pumpkins but so many have been inquiring and I am in the mood right now to create them lol!  Next up. is the "Turkey"  Peggy!!

Please note-  You may want to scroll other blog post on the subject matter for tips and trick! If you are new to checking in.

I insert the cans because I like adding flowers, but I was looking at the witch and the moon and now I am thinking halloween trees.  Oh, that witch would look great with a craggy old tree in it and maybe a few ornies or bats flying around. You don't have to just use these as outside decorations, remember think outside of the box!  I will say though if you put these on your porch they won't blow away. I must go shopping now for Halloween trees!!!!

Any guesses or did you sneak ahead and look at the pictures lol??
Picture
Skinning the pumpkin-  I just used a xacto knife to score a line down each section of the pumpkin to peel off the plastic skin. I comes off very easily as I sprayed them with Pam spray, like I said not sure if you have to spray, but I didn't want to take any chances.  Now you will notice they do have the eye indents, but I didn't want those as I wanted to create my own eyes in the eye sockets, so I just sanded them out.  Messy messy job!!!!
Once again this project turned so many directions!  I originally was going to sculpt little mice poking out of the moon and the hat but ended up doing a little witchy owl on the moon.  I used Apoxie Sculpt for the cement projects as it is freeze thaw resistant to weather and you use a lot of sculpting compound !!  It takes me an entire tub to complete one project.  It would take entirely tooooooo much quikwood.

That little pumpkin is hollow inside.

What a smiley Old Moon!
Picture
Picture
I really think this moon needs a black branchy craggy old tree with bats flying all over since the witchy owl is holding her little bat friend.

Background in Pic-  How do you like my new shower curtain bawahaha!  Yes that is my new shower curtain.  I ordered from Rosegal and it was too long.  I have to re-do top with new bracket holes, but in the meantime I thought ohhh pretty background.  Remember think outside of the box!

Is it a concrete pumpkin?  I think not!  Along with a great DecoArt sealer tip!!

I always like to think outside of the box.  Most would look at the plastic pumpkin buckets and only see a pumpkin.  I see so many faces, I'm going to try a moon, scarecrow, pumpkin, black cat etc.... you get the picture!  I might do the moon next.  I am thinking this will make a great class in the month August for "Witchy Weekend"  in 2018.  Now if your flying in for a class this one might not be for you as that concrete witch is heavy!!  LOL!
Picture
From This.....
The gang is all lined up.  I sprayed the inside of the bucket to keep the concrete from sticking.  Now I'm not sure you would have to do this, but I figured better safe than sorry. Remember if you buy concrete mix buy the quikcrete mortar mix to get the smoother pumpkin!  I saved cans for inserting in the centers to hold flowers later.  The sarah wrap was to place over the top.

Tip of the week:

Concrete can be very porous, Yes, I know there are all kinds of concrete sealers out there but I was in a hurry to paint and I reached for my DecoArt MagiKote (which is made for coating Styrofoam.)  I evenly applied it all over any exposed concrete areas before painting and I have to tell you it worked like a Magic!!!!!  Painting was so much easier using the MagiKote .  It helped prevent the concrete from soaking up my paint!  See always think outside of the box!!
So I sent hubby to Wal-mart over the weekend for more Pumpkin buckets  and he bought them all!  So we will be able to make lots of witches next year in 2018!!!  Did I mention I love my hubby!
Picture
So, I am heading off into the weekend for two days of teaching classes and I won't have a blog up until maybe next Tuesday .  Maybe I will share some class happening from the weekend.
Have a blessed weekend!

Great Cost Saving Find At Hobby Lobby!

Just a quickie today, although this 3 minute short video took me over and hour to upload. There's gotta be a better way.  I love a great deal and wanted to share with you my cost saving find.  If I sound a little winded I had just taken a benadryl as I had a major allergic reaction to some dish soap.

Ohhh wait to you see what's coming next.  I am sculpting on one of those concrete pumpkins!!  Hint Hint!  Please remember to check yesterday's blog post and cast your vote for  the May's class selections.  Your opinions do matter to me as it is you I am planning classes for and I really like offering things you would love to make.
Blessings and enjoy your Thursday!
